SINCE its launch in January 1988 the Lismore Car Boot Market has proudly encouraged and supported community development, celebration, diversity, sustainability and small business.

"The market regularly has more than 200 stalls offering new and used, unusual or traditional, wild and weird, all with enthusiastic traders from the local and regional community," owner-manager, Marny Bonner said.

"It really is a reflection of the broader Northern Rivers community in all its diversity.

"When we started the market 25 years ago, co-founder Steve Cooke and I decided that it must reflect and support the community while also providing good support to the stallholders.

"After all, it's no market without stallholders."

In 1988, there was no Sunday trading anywhere in Lismore and the venture started out as a self-employment initiative for Steve and Marny.

Within five years it needed a team of eight co-ordinators to help manage the multi-faceted event.

"It's a bit like doing a 200-piece jigsaw puzzle of autumn leaves," Marny said, "and only feasible with a great team of market staff."

Affectionately referred to as The Booty by many local market-goers, the market also hosts budding musicians and performers, craft and art demonstrations, aspiring politicians and even government organisations distributing information.

Hundreds of charities and community groups have used the market to raise a conservatively estimated $500,000 over the years through Charity of the Day program or fundraising stalls.

A multitude of treasures and trinkets, colourful clothes, trunks of toys, delightful dolls, utensils and tools have been bought and sold and some even rebought and resold to many thousands of visitors over the past 25 years.

As an exciting community focal point, the popular local meeting place has long since grown to become a regional tourist attraction.

Shake your booty!

Rain, hail or shine the Lismore Car Boot Market is held on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month.

Bookings can be made on 02 6622 5751 or email lismorecarbootmarket@gmail.com.
