THE 61-year-old man who died in a fatal collision at Whiporie on Saturday has been identified as Peter Newbold of Clarenza.

Mr Newbold was riding a motorcycle which collided with a utility driven by a younger man on the Summerland Way near the Whiporie shop about 10.20am on Saturday.

It is understood Mr Newbold died shortly after the crash.

Mr Newbold was the area manager for Tursa Employment and Training in Coffs Harbour and was a former president of the Coffs Harbour Chamber of Commerce.

Friends said Mr Newbold, a motorbike and vintage car enthusiast, was highly regarded in business and employment industry circles.

Mr Newbold's wife Anne is heavily involved with the Grafton Criterion Theatre.

The couple's three daughters are understood to be at home or on their way home to pay respects to their father.

The Daily Examiner is expecting to have more details about Mr Newbold's life in Wednesday's edition.

It is understood the driver of the utility was a man in his 30s from the Whiporie area.

The Summerland Way was blocked for hours as police carried out an investigation at the scene - they will prepare a report for the Coroner.

Police said the driver of the utility was unhurt in the crash.

Further details will be published as they come to light.
