All major flights into Ballina cancelled

UPDATE  2.40pm: The remaining REX flight into Lismore today has now been cancelled.

EARLIER: JETSTAR and Virgin airlines have both cancelled all flights to Ballina Byron Gateway Airport today.

Airport manager Neil Weatherson said he had been advised mid-morning that both Jetstar and Virgin airlines would be cancelling flights into Ballina airport due to the weather conditions.

He said the airlines were not diverting any flights leaving the passengers who are due to land in at Ballina today stranded in Sydney.

"We are open as far as I am concerned and the weather is improving but unfortunately the airlines have cancelled all their flights into Ballina," he said.

"Jetstar and Virgin have notified me that they are cancelling their flights but I haven't heard from REX yet.

"From my point of view the weather is definitely improving but it is the airlines call whether they cancel flights.

"They have cancelled their flights all together so there are no diversions to other airports. If REX comes in this afternoon they should be able to land.

"By tomorrow hopefully things will be back to normal."

Mr Weatherson said Ballina wasn't the only airport in the region that airlines canceled flightsto due to bad weather.

"Yesterday at Coolangatta there were over 30 flights cancelled due to the weather so we haven't fared too badly," he said.

Affected flights due to arrive at Ballina airport include the 3.35pm Virgin flight, and the 4.20pm Jetstar flight.

Lismore Airport coordinator Chris Whitney said no REX flights into Lismore today had been cancelled.

He said he expected the 3.45pm REX flight from Sydney to make the return leg at about 6pm.
