Anti-aging made easy

Living Skincare's Elle Wilson
Living Skincare's Elle Wilson

BYRON couple Elle and Toby Wilson are the brains behind a series of workshops on weight loss and anti-aging as well as a skincare range called Living Skincare.

Elle, an author and speaker, and Toby, a health writer, began selling the skincare range that contains not a single preservative or toxic chemical in 2008. Their workshops have grown in popularity through word of mouth.

We put some questions to them about anti-aging including caring for our hormones, our bones and our skin.

Q: Are healthy hormones important to good skin and bones?

A: Definitely! Hormones are signals. They communicate messages to cells. What happens if we attend too many rock concerts? Or work in the presence of loud machinery for long periods? It can damage our hearing, right?

Well, it's the same with our cells ability to hear the messages our hormones deliver.

A poor diet and stress can negatively affect the functioning of key hormones like insulin, which has been linked to acne, along with a whole host of other health issues.

Over the long term these factors can interfere with our hormonal signalling which is also crucial to healthy bone maintenance.

Q: What do we do that can negatively affect our hormones?

A: Unconscious eating habits are a major cause of hormonal dysfunction, because it causes our cells to be bombarded with unnecessary and inappropriate hormonal signals.

For happy, healthy hormones and good skin and bones, stay off sugar and other non-fibre carbohydrates that quickly convert to glucose, such as breads, pastries, pumpkin and potatoes. High sugar diets can be a major cause of hormonal dysfunction.

Q: What about stress. How does that interfere with our skin and our health?

A: Stress is a major issue for women. Its effect on the health of our skin, our aging and our inner well-being is totally underrated.

We stress about our weight and restrict our food intake, putting both our mind and our bodies under constant stress. We stress about aging and we are on a constant look out for the next quick fix.

What we can do instead is keep our hormones happy and our stress levels down.

Eat lots of healthy fats, vegetables and moderate protein and relax. That's key to health and beautiful skin.

Q: Why is your skincare different to other companies?

A: Our skincare has been developed specifically to restore and rebuild the acid mantle.

The acid mantle is a delicate and precious layer of our skin. It protects moisture from evaporating from our cells and protects our skin from bad bacteria.

A healthy acid mantle offers our skin an aliveness, radiance, clarity, youthfulness and freedom from unsightly breakouts.

Q: If we decrease bad habits, how can we also protect the acid mantle so we look and feel good?

A common trend over the last 17 years has been AHA peels, chemical peels, laser resurfacing, microderm- abrasion and so on.

In other words, exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate.

What these beauty treatments offer is a short-term benefit.

When we strip away the surface layers of our skin, what we can see is the younger, fresher layers underneath.

So our appearance improves, momentarily. But the result is deeper, more chronic, long-term problems, as our skin loses its ability to hold its own hydration, becomes more vulnerable to bad bacteria and an entire host of other skin problems.

It's vitally important to protect the health of this layer of our skin.
