MEMBER for Richmond Justine Elliot has announced $100,000 in financial support will be readily available to the RSL and community groups in the lead up to the centenary of Anzac Day.

The money is part of a federal government initiative to enable communities across Australia to commemorate the centenary of Anzac in their own way.

On the North Coast the funds will be divided among educational institutions, not-for-profit organisations, the RSL and ex-service clubs.

Mrs Elliot said this was an opportunity to obtain funding for special projects in the electorate which honoured those who served in the Great War.

"This financial support is very welcome and will allow communities on the North Coast to decide themselves the way the Anzac centenary can be best commemorated locally," Cr Elliot said.

"It will also help ensure the Anzac legacy continues to be handed down to younger generations."

Mrs Elliot said examples of eligible activities under the program included public commemorative events, relevant school projects and First World War memorials or honour boards.

Tweed Heads/Coolangatta RSL President Joe Russell said he believed it was a brilliant idea that would be a great support to community planning that was already underway for the 2015 centenary commemoration.

"We could find many, many places to use the money," he said.

"We will be working along side local schools to create major commemorative artwork displays and the equipment costs are already looking to be about $9000."

Representatives from various ex-service organisations in the area will be chosen to form a committee to overlook the division of funds.

More information will be available soon on the Anzac Centenary website: www.anzaccentenary.gov.au.
