Area health reminds people to practice safe sex

CHRISTMAS may be all about giving and receiving but there are certain presents which are definitely not appreciated.

To avoid waking up with an uninvited, unwelcome and unpleasant souvenir, North Coast HIV/ Sexual Health, Hepatitis and Needle Syringe Services has warned people to be careful, put their health first and practice safe sex at all times.

Manager HIV and Related Programs Jenny Heslop said this was often the time of year when people increased their alcohol consumption and took unnecessary risks which could increase the chance of catching a sexually transmitted or blood born infection.

"These infections are preventable through safe sex and can be treated and managed if they are detected through regular testing," she said.

"We would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season and encourage them to heed the safe sex message.

"Injecting drug users are also encouraged to safely dispose of used needles and syringes in sharp disposal bins."

People who are afraid they have been infected over the holidays are urged to contact the Sexual Health Information Line on 1800 451 624 and those worried about a blood borne infection can contact the Hep C helpline on 1800 803 990 or the PEP hotline (HIV) on 1800 737 669.

If you've been accidentally pricked by a discarded needle call the Needle Stick Injury hotline on 1800 804 823 and if you've found a discarded needle or syringe call the Needle Clean-up hotline on 1800 633 353.
