ICONIC Australian artist Ken Done has a fascination for the creatures living in the sea and after a number of underwater expeditions, has put his marine experiences on canvas.

Lovers of the work of the artist as well as those keen to see what swims, shimmers, darts and glows in the seas, can see exhibition Sea Gardens at the Tweed River Art Gallery from January 18-March 3.

Mr Done explored the tropical reefs and islands of Tonga and the coral islands of Wakatobi in Indonesia where he painted the underwater gardens he came across.

"It's such a joy to experience diving on a new reef somewhere in Australia or the Pacific.

"Another world of constant inspiration," Mr Done said.

Tweed River Art Gallery director Susi Muddiman said she was pleased to host this exhibition.

"Although Ken is one of Australia's most recognised and well-loved artists, many people have not had the opportunity to view or hear him talk about his recent works.

"Not only will visitors have the pleasure of viewing Ken's work, they also have a unique opportunity to hear the artist speak about his experience in creating this series of work," Ms Muddiman said.

The exhibition's official opening by art collector and patron Patrick Corrigan is on Friday, January 18 at 6.30pm and is open to all.

For those interested in finding out more about Mr Done and what inspires him, the Friends of the Gallery have organised An Evening with Ken Done AM featuring an In Conversation between gallery director Susi Muddiman and Mr Done.

While visitors enjoy refreshments provided by the friends, Mr Done will discuss the inspiration for his vibrant body of work included in the Sea Garden exhibition.

Tickets for the event are $30 and availability is limited so bookings are essential.

Contact the Tweed River Art Gallery on 02 6670 2790 before January 15.
