Barry Dubois is living with his inner hoon

RENOVATOR and builder Barry Dubois, who is the co-host of Channel Ten's the Living Room, revealed to us he's really a rev-head.

What's your current drive?

We were a one car family until the twins arrived eight months ago. That is an Audi A4 TDi Cabriolet which my wife loves.

Now we are a two-car family and the second is a Range Rover Vogue, it's a real family car but its one of the first cars I have ever really loved.

What do you love about your car?

Through my life I have enjoyed different things about my cars but the sound of a big engine really purring always tickles my fancy.

What was your first car and what happened to it?

Barry Dubois.

A 1973 model Valiant Galant in canary yellow - it was badly hail damaged but the right price for an apprentice carpenter to get to work. I will admit I was a hoon and I put little mags and fat tyres on it. I replaced the clutch in it myself four times because of all the wheelies before I handed it down to my younger brother when he started his apprenticeship. To this day I hate that gearbox oil smell.

During your childhood, what car did your family have?

Our first brand new car was a 1971 Holden Belmont sedan, it was the pride of our family. My mum insisted on the safest colour which was white, a wireless was an extra we couldn't afford.

We sang a lot of Simon and Garfunkel and Carpenters songs on long holiday journeys down the south coast.

We used to drive slowly through the towns so we could see our reflection in the shop windows.

A proud moment for our family was at the lights of one of those country towns a little boy my age said to his dad "Look at that brand new car it's so beautiful", none of us said anything but we all sat tall and proud in our seats that day.

What is your dream car and why?

My dream car isn't a car of the modern times, I could not afford as a young man. It's a 1976 Ford F100. When my son is older we will get one and it will be used for all our big adventures together. I hope to restore one and it will purr.
