A RESULT of a lifetime's work breeding the perfect Rhode Island Red will go under the hammer at the Lismore Showground Poultry Pavilion today.

Doug Hogan - who also owned South Lismore's Station Hotel - spent more than 70 years raising the chooks right up until his death on December 23.

Mr Hogan was known for his attention to detail and unconventional methods, including feeding the birds beer dregs from the hotel with their morning feed.

Daughter Barbara Murphy - who used to help her dad prepare the chickens for agricultural shows across the region - said he loved them like they were his own children.

"It's a bit sad that we have to sell them off really," Mrs Murphy said.

"I hope they go to a good home."

Mrs Murphy said her family found ribbons dating back to 1942 among Mr Hogan's massive collection of awards and trophies.

Poultry lovers from all around Australia are expected to attend the once in a lifetime auction.

"There will be over 200 birds to be auctioned which are all Rhode Island Reds," Lismore Poultry Club Inc. secretary Steve Dubber said.

"Quite often when breeders sell their stock they keep their best for breeding and get rid of their good chickens or those they don't have a use for any more.

"This auction is a complete dispersal, meaning breeders will have the chance to get to the heart of the blood lines."

Mr Dubber said pure Doug Hogan Rhode Island Red bloodlines were well known in the industry.

"Rhode Island Reds are an American breed and when we had visitors from America come over they were blown away by how superior Doug's chickens were," he said.
