For us Aussies who may not be familiar with anything more Mexican than tacos or nachos, Eva's recipes and family stories are a great insight into the cuisine of her heritage. And the personal stories that go with many of the recipes are fantastic as well. Definitely makes our best list.

Here, Alicia shares her insights on cooking rice: "Wash rice. Soak rice. Put rice in pot. Add water. Boil on high heat. Cover. Turn the heat down. Simmer, remove and serve warm." Ground-breaking stuff. Still, we shouldn't scoff, because according to Silverstone, "by following the Kind Diet, you will become more sensitive to all the important things in life - like love, nature, and your deepest, truest self." And you'll know how to cook rice.

Who knew a gangsta's paradise could be the kitchen? In this kooky little cookbook (with the cheesiest of cheesy covers) Coolio puts the G back in gourmet with this collection of cost-conscious meals. With chapters such as "How to Become a Kitchen Pimp", "Chillin' and Grillin" and "Pasta Like a Rasta", and dishes like Cold Shrimpin', Banana Ba-Ba-Ba-Bread, and, our favourite, Bro-Ghetti, what's not to love?
