HIGH blood pressure was one of the top three leading risk factors in disease across the globe, a worldwide study of disease revealed on Friday.

The latest Global Burden of Disease Study, released on Friday, showed high blood pressure was a bigger factor in disease than tobacco smoking and alcohol use.

Based on global figures collected in 2010, the study showed high blood pressure was a risk in more than 9.3 million deaths around the world.

This was followed by tobacco smoking (including second-hand smoke), contributing to more than 6.2 million deaths; and alcohol use, which was a factor in 4.5 million deaths globally in 2010.

And while much of the world was burdened by obesity, underweight was still the leading risk factor in death among people living in sub-Saharan Africa.

Other significant disease risks world-wide were household air pollution and non-exclusive discontinued breastfeeding.
