Bora locals still isolated

BORA RIDGE, southwest of Coraki, remained in flood yesterday much to the frustration of locals.

At least 20 properties near the junction of Haughwood and Myall Creek roads were isolated at 5pm yesterday, with some further south along Haughwood Rd expecting to be stuck for several more days.

The area has been inundated since the weekend but, unlike surrounding areas, the floodwaters are yet to recede.

The flooded areas lie west of the junction of Sandy and Bungawalbin creeks (just before they flow into the Richmond River), in a widening flood plain between the two creeks.

The Woodburn SES confirmed that 50 people at Bora Ridge and other 50 people along Bungawalbin-Whiporie Rd were isolated as of last night, with the Woodburn-Coraki Rd south of the Bungawalbin Bridge remaining flooded.

Several other roads in the area also remained flooded, including Coraki-Ellangowan Rd, Bora-Codrington Rd, and Bungawalbin-Whiporie Rd.

According to local Doug Wood, the floodwaters around his property had become even deeper on Wednesday night.

"The water in the river is continuing to fall but the water over Myall Creek Rd is still rising," Mr Wood said yesterday.

"Apparently some of the floodgates are not operational, which means the water sitting on the paddocks and the road has nowhere to go and could sit there for a day or so.

"It should have been down by now. To have us here as the only place on the far north coast still in flood is strange."

Mr Wood said 3km of road was covered south of his place, with three properties even more isolated.

"They've got no hope for days," he said.

"The water had only just gone down from ex-Cyclone Oswald, and it's come straight back up again."
