BYRON Bay's new $3.75 million library is finally opened its doors.

A small but enthusiastic crowd gathered at the library for the 9.30am opening today.

President of the Friends of the Library group, Bob Levett, said the opening realised a long-held dream for a lot of people.

"The library is so much more than I thought it would be," he said.

"It's beautiful, you can see the trees out the back and the children's area is just wonderful.

"It's long overdue."

Brian Pamphilon from Suffolk Park was "super impressed" with the new building.

"It's so open, spacious and light and there are wonderful places to study."

Area librarian Byron Shire, Brenda Anderson, said the opening was a very special day.

"The library is absolutely fantastic for the community," she said.

"I'm actually at a loss for words. It's been a long journey."

The new library has been in the works for nearly 30 years and has been under construction since September 2011.

The facility was formally opened by Byron Shire Mayor Simon Richardson on Saturday afternoon but today is the first day Northern Rivers residents can enjoy it as a library.

A family fun morning for the community has been planned at the library for February 16 from 9.30am.
