IN a positive venture that will roll on for an entire year, Lismore and Villages Relay for Life Committee have created a "Miss Relay" calendar for 2013, raising funds and awareness for the charity and what it stands for.

Ann New, from the committee and one of the main organizers of the calendar, said each month was been sponsored by a different business and pictures a "Miss Relay" and a "survivor".

"It's a fun calendar supporting a very serious and worthwhile cause," she said.

"I think the men secretly liked putting on the dresses and getting done up!"

Her daughter Jessie New acted as photographer on the project, creating colourful results.

Keryn Bryen is one woman featured as a survivor in the August page of the calendar.

Mrs Bryen was diagnosed with melanoma in 1977, and following a "radical" surgery, she was placed in remission two years.

She said that being part of the calendar and other similar awareness programs enriches her life and helps her give back.

She said she believes she got kept alive "to let people know that you can survive it" and show that "It's not such a taboo subject. When I first got melanoma, no one talked about it."

She said she has a job to do - to make people aware the issues surrounding cancer.

"This touches every family," she said.

Calendars will be available for $10 each, and can be purchased from the businesses of the sponsors.
