Car park behaviour a 'concern' for Daily Examiner readers

ONE OF the issues Daily Examiner readers identified as being a problem over the Christmas period was driver behaviour in car parks.

"The speed limit is 10km or walking pace," said Judy Hackett via our Facebook page.

"But I see people all the time with their foot planted firmly on the accelerator.

"Over this period while there are so many people rushing and kids off school it worries me that there is such little care for others.

"A speed camera would give very interesting results."

Grafton Shoppingworld centre manager Greg Hayes said parking was at a premium in his centre over Christmas but generally customers had been very well behaved.

"The last couple of mornings we've had people at the car park keeping an eye on things and customers have been very good with speed," Mr Hayes said.

He said there had only been a few minor crashes in the Shoppingworld car park over the past few years.

"Mostly those were people misjudging their park and not associated with speed," he said.

"Generally people are pretty good with car park rules. Most people understand Christmas is a busy time and parking is at a premium."

Car parks and the law

NSW Police said you cannot get a ticket for speeding in a car park because it is not a public road.

However they said obviously charges such as negligent or dangerous driving and more serious motor vehicle offences would draw prosecution.
