CARMEL Brinkley used the final day of a leap year to propose to her now fiancé Dale Henderson.

Taking out a classified ad in yesterday's QT, Carmel popped the question to Dale, to which he happily said yes.

The couple have been through a whirlwind romance which has seen them go from strangers to engaged in only seven months.

The proposal wasn't quite as easy as Carmel had hoped for though.

"Dale was reading through the paper and I had the camera ready to catch his reaction," Carmel said.

"He was reading from the bottom up, and must have read every other word on the page and then turned over.

"I had to turn the page back and point it out. It was OK though, I got the reaction I wanted in the end though."

Dale said the proposal was the last thing he expected when reading the paper.

"I was completely stunned. I said yes straight away though," he said.

"Somehow I missed it when I was reading the page, but I didn't hesitate for a second once I saw it. I knew I wanted to marry her."

While the pair have only been dating for four months, after meeting seven months ago, Carmel said she knew he was the one.

"He's my soul mate. There isn't a doubt in my mind," she said.

"This is the way I wanted to end this year and start the new year fresh."

While 2012 was a leap year, in which tradition states are the only years women can propose to men, Carmel said she was only thinking of Dale and not about superstitions.

According to a European tradition from the 19th century, leap years, and in some cases only the leap day of February 29, are the only times women can propose to men.
