'Cars of the future' to make up race field

FOR the first time in the history of V8 Supercar racing in Australia, 28 brand new cars will line up on the starting grid for this weekend's season-opening Clipsal 500 in Adelaide.

With all competitors in 2013 to race under the 'Car of the Future' specifications, the entire field will be made up of new cars. Of the 28 entries, 15 will be VF Commodores, six will be Ford Falcon GFs, four will be Nissan Altimas and three will be Mercedes-Benz E63 AMGs.

The arrival of the Nissan Motorsport and its Altima into the V8 Supercars Championship marks the first time a Nissan has competed in a Touring Car or V8 event since the final round of the 1992 series at Oran Park in Sydney.

On that day, a young Mark Skaife was behind the wheel of a Nissan GT-R, winning the round and the first of five drivers championships.

The arrival of Erebus Motorsport V8 and its three Mercedes cars also marks the return of the German marque for the first time since 1990.

Despite the changes, 2012 V8 champion Jamie Whincup will start favourite in his Commodore, competing for the Red Bull Racing Australia team for the first time.
