Celebrity cooks for Oz Day in Evans Head

IT will be a case of live entrainment in the form of a high-class cooking competition as part of the Richmond Valley Council Australia Day celebrations.

Richmond Valley's Australia Day Ambassador Janelle Bloom and her Ready Steady Cook colleague Peter Everett will be sharpening their knives and competing against local chefs in an Australia Day BBQ "cook-off".

All in the name of the Australia Day spirit, the culinary rivals will be given a variety of locally grown and produced ingredients to create a BBQ banquet with the results judged by local identities.

The local chefs and judges are to be announced in the next few weeks. Margaret Stewart, one of the Australia Day organizers, urged all fans of innovative cookery to come along to see firsthand the skilled professional chef's work with local flavours.

"You never know, you might be inspired with some new recipes," she said.

The Evans Head Community Group is hosting the day with events planned for locations in and around the Evans Head-Casino Life Saving Club.

Just some of the events include a mini-triathlon, chalk art, touch footy and volleyball on the beach for the kids, while bigger kids can watch the skateboarders showing off their moves next to the youth stage, while music and other performances are blasted out.

There will also be bush poets, face-painting, whip-cracking and a sausage sizzle to keep the people entertained and well-fed.

Mrs Stewart said the day was set to be a bucket of fun for all. "What could be more fun than riding a camel, listening to bush poets, watching kids playing games on the beach, skateboarding and having a sausage sizzle, all at one Australia Day?" Ms Stewart said.
