TRAINER Christy Controneo is hopeful a new health program will help tackle the growing issue of teenage girls and unhealthy body images.

The Fighting Fit trainer will begin her 12-week program, Christy's Teen Angels, next month.

It will be open to girls aged 12 to 17 and include kettle bell exercises and boxing, as well as nutrition advice.

"The main focus of it is on body image," Miss Controneo said.

"At this age, it's the time when girls go through a lot of body issues. I want to put these girls on a path in the right direction."

While some might argue 12 was too young for girls to be involved in a fitness regime, Miss Controneo said it was not a program that focused on weight loss.

"It's no different to a gymnast training and is more about making the girls stronger," she said.

"It's more about creating a support network."

A private Facebook page will also be created for the girls where they can discuss issues and ask questions in a safe environment.

The program will lead off from Miss Controneo's Christy's Angel program.

"A lot of the mums wanted to sign their kids up but you can't train a teenager the same as an adult," she said.

Owner of Fighting Fit Glenn Azar said it was unfortunate that body image had become such a big problem amongst girls.

"We realise there could be negative connotations but it's not a bootcamp and we're not flogging the kids to lose weight," he said.

"It will include all functional movements, not machine-based movements, which their bodies can handle."

The program will entail six sessions a week with girls able to choose which they attend.

It begins at the end of next month.
