Clarence Valley Council wants to give you a free barbecue

AFTER severe weather forced many event organisers to call off outdoor celebrations on Australia Day in 2012, Clarence Valley's Australia Day Advocate Councillor Sue Hughes is hoping for better conditions in 2013.

Weather permitting, Cr Hughes is keen to see communities and groups across the Valley get involved in what has become an annual Backyard BBQ initiative, sponsored and promoted by Clarence Valley Council.

"It is great to see this initiative continue. It is such an iconic way for Australians to come together," Cr Hughes said.

Cr Hughes said the barbecue packs had become extremely popular and the intention was to take the party to the people, making it easy for neighbours and community groups to mix, mingle and celebrate.

"Anything that helps to bring neighbours and communities together is a great thing, and it's brilliant that Council facilitates this simple Aussie celebration," she said.

In the spirit of Australia Day, local businesses have supported the initiative including: Turf to Surf Butchery and Brooks Family Bakery in Yamba, Holiday Coast Meats and Hanks Kitchen in Grafton and Maclean Variety Meats.

As part of the package, recipients will receive enough bread and meat to cater for up to approximately 40 people.

To receive a free BBQ pack for your Australia Day event, you'll need to register with Clarence Valley Council by completing an application form outlining how you intend to promote your neighbour BBQ and who will be coming along to join in your Australia Day celebrations.

To obtain an application form call 6643 0200 and ask for extension 2107 or email

It's first in first served, so be quick.
