THE Mackay community have again stepped up to support one of their own and Nyrie Contor couldn't be more grateful.

Pregnant with twins, Nyrie was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive breast cancer. Today she's flying to Brisbane for a lumpectomy, a trip that has been made a little easier thanks to the support of the community.

The Save My Sister Nyrie fundraiser raised almost $50,000 for the Mackay teacher.

"I cannot say enough in words to express my gratitude," she posted on Facebook.

"All your effort makes me even more determined to fight and kill this horrible, insidious disease.

"I had no idea of the financial implications of a situation like this until it actually happened to me. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you."

The fundraising team initially gave $10,000 to Nyrie before Christmas but handed her an additional $37,535 at the weekend.

Fundraising committee member Hayley Perkins said the money would be used to assist the family of five with their travel costs and help pay for a nanny while Nyrie is being treated.

"We were very excited and humbled by the amount of support we received."
