Council leaves Kingscliff command in State hands

AN attempt to put Chinderah and Cudgen back in the spotlight for a police local area command failed at the Tweed Shire Council meeting on Thursday.

Councillor Carolyn Byrne put a motion to the council to write to the State Government and NSW police recommending sites at Chinderah and Cudgen as preferred location for the local area command.

The site at Marine Pde Kingscliff was unpopular and led a NSW Land and Environment Court case that deemed the initial approval invalid.

Councillor Michael Armstrong said it was not the job of the council to tell the state government where to build the police station.

"It's not my area of expertise and I don't think there is anyone else in this room with that expertise," Cr Armstrong said.

"It's so presumptuous that we know better, that we know there are two sites that should be considered.

Cr Armstrong said the council should not be "tying the hand or fetter the hands of the NSW Police service."

Cr Byrne said these were simply recommendation.

"We will not have a say in this," Cr Byrne said.

"We may not have all the knowledge however there has been a considerable learning curve."

She said the NSW Police Service has got it wrong to date.

The NSW Planning and Infrastructure Minister Brad Hazzard was considering the planning application for the command at Marine Pde after the Joint Regional Planning Panel recommended refusal.
