Council to help kids with ‘street art’

IT MAY look like vandalism to the untrained eye but for the cool kids these days it's called "street art".

And it seems the "cool kids" are also responsible kids as they are looking for a designated area for them to express themselves.

"We owe it to the youth of our valley to listen to them and investigate their valued requests and make an informed decision," Cr Margaret McKenna said in a notice of motion to the council last month.

Clarence Valley Council staff have now been instructed to get some information on the possible location of a street art space in Grafton or South Grafton and to investigate the potential benefits of it.

Youths from the Valley are travelling to Lismore, Coffs, Byron and Murwillumbah to use their graffiti walls.

Back in March this year a number of South Grafton High School students met with Mayor Richie Williamson and local member Chris Gulaptis.

Following that meeting, one of the youths, Kade Valja, sent a follow-up email to the Mayor suggesting a "street art space" in the area.

The river side of the levee wall in South Grafton has been floated as potential space as well as a few other areas in the town.

In preparing the report, the council staff have been instructed to consult with young people as to the preferred location and report back in the April 2013 council meeting.
