TWEED Shire Council has again come home with a major prize, the Sustainable Procurement in Practice Award, presented by the Local Government and Shires Association.

Last year, the council brought home the association's Shires Division major award, the A.R. Bluett Award, presented to the council which made the greatest relative progress in the preceding year.

It won the Best Project 2012 category of the Local Government Excellence in the Environment Awards held in Sydney and won the award for purchasing goods or services that have a lesser impact on human health and/or the environment when compared with similar goods and services.

Tweed mayor Barry Longland said it was reassuring for the public to see that council made sustainability an important factor when buying goods and services.

"We all need to play our part and as Tweed Shire Council sources many millions of dollars worth of goods and services each year, our sustainable purchasing decisions are making a difference to human health and the environment in the Tweed," Cr Longland said.

The council's sustainable purchases included solar street lights, recycled plastic bollards and drinking fountains.
