Councillor seeks stronger stand on Kingscliff command centre

A TWEED Shire councillor is pushing for the state government to move the proposed command centre at Kingscliff from Marine Pde to Cudgen.

Councillor Carolyn Byrne wants the council to write a letter to NSW Police and the state government stating that the council's preferred location for the command centre was at the corner of Tweed Coast Rd and Cudgen Rd in Cudgen rather than at the site of the Kingscliff Police Station on Marine Pde.

According to the request, the Cudgen site was considered as one option previously but was passed over.

The council will consider Cr Byrne's request at the council meeting next week.

The location of the command centre on Marine Pde had drawn a lot of criticism from residents who were concerned about traffic and siren noise along the main street.

Kingscliff residents are still waiting from a response from the Police and Emergency Services Minister Michael Gallacher to a 1600-signature petition that Tweed MP Geoff Provest tabled in parliament last month.

There are more than 500 signatures so it triggers a response from the minister," Mr Provest said when he accepted the petition.

Mr Provest said he had spoken to the minister about the proposed command centre on Marine Pde.
