PARKRUN Kingscliff will hold its weekly 5km run this week to encourage Tweed residents to get up off the couch and get active.

The socially inclusive run for all exercise levels is held by Parkrun, who holds free timed runs around the world.

The Kingscliff event is the smallest in Australia at the moment, despite almost 50 runners showing up on Saturday last week.

Organised by volunteers, the run hopes to get people out and about in their community and is a great opportunity to socialise while getting some exercise.

Dog walkers, people with prams and kids are encouraged to join in the run, with the tasty bonus of freshly baked cake available after the race.

Those involved will meet for a coffee after the run to unwind and have a chat at the Saltbean Expresso Bar in Salt Village.

Event Director Dawn Courage volunteers her time to get the race organised every Saturday, and said she's been having an excellent time.

"We started on the 22nd of October last year," she said.

"It began as a group of people who didn't know anybody and now we're becoming a little family."

Mrs Courage said the event was inclusive to everybody and was a great way to meet new people.

"Even though I've lived in Kingscliff for two to three years I only knew a few people and now I know about 50," she said.

"Kids are welcome, older people, everybody.

Mrs Courage was glad she found the program, which was always a highlight of her week.

"It's got me back running again," she said.

"This is really to get people who don't do anything to come and do something, it's for everybody."

But the run isn't all hard work, as Mrs Courage described.

"Our little unique thing is that we have someone bake a cake every week."

Mrs Courage said the event was growing steadily and hoped the trend would continue.

"We get some people who show up on the morning and say they registered 10 minutes ago," she said.

"Last week we had 47 runners and five volunteers. But we are still the smallest Parkrun in Australia."

"Anybody is welcome to come along."

Competitors and those looking for a bit of stress-free fun will meet at Bells Boulevard in Salt village this Saturday at 8am.

Those who want to join in can register online at www.parkrun.com.au/kingscliff.
