Crowd braves poor weather to remember the fallen

A SMALL, dedicated crowd braved the weather last Sunday to attend the Coolangatta/ Tweed Heads RSL Sub-branch Remembrance Day ceremony held at Coolangatta's cenotaph.

After the assembled guests observed a minute's silence, a number of ex-servicemen and members of the public laid wreaths at the cenotaph, an endeavour made rather difficult by the strong winds blowing across the ceremonial site.

Sub-branch secretary Dr John Griffin addressed the crowd and spoke of his visit to Arlington National Cemetery in Washington where he laid a reef last year.

Dr Griffin made the point Australia wasn't the only country that honoured its fallen soldiers and where large crowds attended annual remembrance ceremonies.

Following the ceremony about 100 RSL members attended a luncheon at Twin Towns Services Club.

RSL Sub-branch president Joe Russell thanked the people who attended, especially considering the climatically challenging circumstances.
