Death wish: Rider recalls eight life changing seconds

EIGHT seconds doesn't seem long, but to some people it can be life-changing.

For better or for worse, those eight seconds can be what defines someone's career or standing in their sport.

The night of the National Rodeo Association meet at Caboolture, Queensland in 2008, is remembered by Shane Want as one of the more painful.

"I came off a bull and ended up shattering my pelvis," Want said.

"I ended up with about six fractures and had a few bars in my hips to keep it all in place.

"It's probably the worst injury I've ever had."

The then 17-year-old spent months recovering from an injury that would turn a lot of people away from their chosen sport.

Not Want.

He recovered, got his strength back and got right back on board the bull.

It seemed the natural thing to do for the now 21-year-old, who has been involved in the sport for longer than he can remember.

"I've done it for a long time but I can't tell you how long exactly," Want said.

"Bull riding and rodeo is something that you just get into through family.

"Most of the people on the circuit have a brother, who does it or their dad. It just seems like one of those things."

Want's last ride was at the Jacaranda Rodeo in November when he drew the famed Hot Shot, known across the circuit as being a hell of a bull, with only one rider having conquered the beast.

While Want only lasted five seconds on the bull, he was determined to have another go.

"Hot Shot isn't as hard as what they make out," Want said.

"He drags his backside around and does a few extra bits and pieces but I reckon I'd get him next around."

The challenge of overcoming Hot Shot will have to wait a bit longer for Want with the bull not scheduled to appear this week.

A bull just as fearsome, however, will gladly take its place, with unbeaten Suicidal set to be unleashed.

"There's going to be a fair few good ones down there but Suicidal is probably the best," Want said.

"He's never been ridden, but hopefully one of us can change that this week."

While admitting his preparation hasn't been ideal, Want said he would be ready to rumble on Saturday night.
