Defending champion will surf again in January

AMONG a field of current and ex professionals including the likes of 1999 world tour champ Mark "Occy" Occhilupo and Jay "Bottle" Thompson, Jason Jameson charged through two days of competition surfing to win the 2012 Burleigh Single Fin Classic.

The 2012 champ is now ready to defend his title in 2013 at the famous point break.

As an accomplished surfboard shaper, the Cabarita surfer knows what to look for in a classic single fin craft for the job at hand.

Unfortunately for Jason to shape his own board for the classic he would have to time travel back to pre-1985 as that is the requirement for entrant's board of choice.

"I will be looking for something small enough to throw around and try some new school tricks on, the level each year is getting higher and higher." Jameson said.

Aerial manoeuvres have become more and more popular in the single fin with an increased number of younger surfers registering for competition.

Two or three days on a single fin pre competition will be enough for the champ to iron out any problems on an unfamiliar board. Jameson's experience as a shaper and high level surfer allows him to know very quickly if a board will work for him.

With the chance of a decent swell for the competition run over the first weekend of January, many surfers are prepared with a slightly bigger single fin craft as a back-up.

Wave quality is generally not that crash hot at this time of year on the Gold Coast but there is a slight chance of a swell coinciding with the competition window.

With 95 registered entrants in the open division Jameson is under no illusions that competition will be stiff as levels of surfing climb every year.

"It's always a tough competition with all the ex pros like Luke Egan and Occy pushing everyone hard," he said.

Any surfer to make the quarter finals in the Single Fin generally has a good shot at winning the trophy which shows the level of competition.

"Then you have the Burleigh locals who have the advantage of knowing the wave and they all surf it really well," he said.

Burleigh Board Riders Noah Lane will be extremely hungry to get his mitts on the trophy after finishing runner-up on several occasions; most recently he and Jameson were only separated on a count back in last year's nail-biting final.

Burleigh's James Lewis is always a threat and has also been runner-up on several occasions.
