Development delayed while council have a yarn

A PROPOSED function centre for Cabarita Beach has been stopped in its tracks while Tweed Shire Council holds a workshop on the development.

The $1.1 million additions to a motel at 26-28 Tweed Coast Rd to build a function centre were considered at last week's council meeting but concerns over the height of the structure and noise prompted the council to do a workshop on the development.

Council officers recommended approval under strict conditions that only guests could use the additional facilities under the existing use rights.

Councillor Warren Polglase wanted an amendment to the application to reduce the restrictions on who could use the restaurant/dining area, lounge room and outdoor food and beverage service area.

Cr Polglase was livid at the delay on the development.

"Should we lock the gate on investors coming into the Tweed," he said.

Tweed mayor Barry Longland said the community supported the development but he votes to workshop the application.

"It's a site that is highly degraded and the people want this so I think we should workshop it to ensure we do this properly," Cr Longland said.

Councillor Gary Bagnall said he did not support the development.

"It's an overdevelopment of the site," Cr Bagnall said.

"There is also overshadowing of the reserve and how will that affect flora and fauna."
