Dragon boat race to raise $30,000 for kids in need

KIDS in Need hope to raise a staggering $30,000 at its 30th annual Dragon Boat Race Day.

On Sunday more than 800 keen paddlers in 42 boats will take to the Tweed River as part of the race day.

KIN secretary Pam Mitchell said it would be one of the biggest regattas Tweed Heads had seen in a long while.

"It's just going to be a fantastic day," she said.

More than 2000 spectators are expected to visit Jack Evans Boat Harbour to get a glimpse of the event.

KIN president Mick Lawson said the major fundraiser of the year was always a good family day out.

"It's is a very fun day," he said.

"We are getting dressed up and we stand out amongst the crowd.

"But what we wear all depends on the weather."

Teams competing on the day are made up from all over the community.

Hospitals, hotels, business houses, shops, football teams as well as teams from Dragon Boats Queensland will join in the fun in their team colours.

"All monies raised will stay within our community to support chronically and seriously ill children and those with a disability," Mrs Mitchell said.

"KIN's ongoing assistance helps the continual struggle that families have of finding for expensive equipment and treatment."

From 8am boat race will kick off, if you are heading down do not forget to slip, slop, slap as the forecast is looking hot and sunny.
