Drinking beer leads to a hole-in-one for young golfer

TYSON Rice's decision to head down to his golf course for a beer led to one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments.

Mr Rice, 25, made a hole-in-one and earned $2500 in a challenge at the Abbey Golf Course, Cobaki Lakes.

"I usually go down there on Thursdays for a (twilight) competition and Steve puts on three buck beers," Mr Rice said.

The storm that hit on the Australia Day long weekend flooded the course and caused the cancelation of the twilight competition.

Mr Rice said he just went down to the course on January 31 to support the club and had a go at the hole-in-one challenge.

The challenge has golfers hitting for the hole from 90m away aiming at a 200sq m green over water.

"I've never been overly close. I have got it on the green," Mr Rice said.

"It's quite possible that the wet ground helped and there was no wind at the time."

Abbey Golf Course caretaker Steve Hamilton said the challenge has been running since December and Mr Rice was the first with a hole-in-one.

"It's an island green. I would say about 60 to 70 per cent of people at the course try the hole-in-one competition," Mr Hamilton said.

"We have about 120 players a week (on the nine-hole course) so it's a pretty quiet round for anyone who wants to come out."

The wild weather on Australia Day long weekend hit the course hard with "many trees down" and flooding on the course.

"We will hopefully be opening again this weekend," Mr Hamilton said.

The Abbey 9-hole Golf Course is at 399 Piggabeen Rd, Cobaki Lakes.
