A FATAL head-on crash on the Pacific Hwy just north of the Iluka turn-off yesterday took the state's holiday road toll to 10.

Police said a red Ford Laser travelling north crossed onto the wrong side of the road "for no apparent reason" and came into the path of a southbound silver Ford Falcon about 10am.

A third vehicle, a black Toyota Camry, was also involved in the crash.

The 23-year-old male driver of the Laser was killed at the scene and the two elderly occupants of the Falcon were injured.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter flew one to Lismore Base Hospital and the other was taken by road ambulance to Lismore, with minor injuries.

The occupants of the Camry were unhurt, police said.

Traffic was blocked in both directions for several hours as the police Crash Investigation Unit studied the scene and motorists were diverted to the Summerland Way, adding up to 90 minutes to their journey.

The highway re-opened about 1.30pm.

The death was the 10th in NSW during the 2012/13 holiday period - five fewer than for the same period last year.

Over the same period, 430 people have been hurt in 1351 major traffic crashes, police said.

Extra police are patrolling NSW roads as part of the annual Christmas/New Year traffic enforcement campaign, 'Operation Safe Arrival'.

By Sunday, the 10th day of the operation, police had booked 797 speeding motorists and issued 940 infringement notices for other traffic offences and 33,861 roadside breath tests were conducted resulting in 37 motorists being charged with drink-driving.
