A MAN whose car hit a pedestrian yesterday on Donnans Rd at Lismore Heights should be commended for his actions following the incident, a neighbour has said.

When Ronald Jones heard the chilling sound of the collision just before 7am he raced outside to investigate.

When he got to the roadside, Mr Jones said the Southern Cross University employee was making a 000 call on his mobile phone while trying to tend to the 55-year-old local woman.

"He has taken the lady and laid her on her back, that's what he was told to do by the ambulance on the mobile, and commenced doing CPR straight away until the ambulance arrived," Mr Jones said.

"He was really shaken up but he did everything possible."

Richmond Local Area Command Crime Manager Detective Inspector Greg Moore said the woman was taken to Lismore Base Hospital by ambulance but died a short time later.

Mr Jones and fellow neighbour Marilyn Smith said drivers consistently speed along Donnans Rd.

Mrs Smith said she would be going to see council yesterday to voice her concerns about how dangerous Donnans Rd was.

"If you are going to allow it (50kmh speed limit) put signs up or speed bumps or something."

In a statement an SCU spokeswoman said police were investigating an accident on Donnans Rd involving a university vehicle.

"The University extends its deepest sympathy to the family of the victim," the spokeswoman said.
