POLICE have released the name of Tumbulgum man whose body was found in the Tweed River on Wednesday.

Mark Napieracz, 35, is believed to have been fishing.

Police said at 1.30pm a report of a body was made to the police by two local fishermen.

The fisherman discovered the body 400 metres upriver from the Tumbulgum Bridge.

Tweed Police inspector Gary Cowan said police located fishing gear and a car, believed to be owned by the Tumbulgum man, nearby on Dulguigan Road by Tumbulgum Bridge

On Wednesday one of the fishermen, Matt Price said he and his mate did not realise what they had found until they got closer.

"All we saw was a bit of blue cloth," Mr Price told My Daily News.

"We thought it was a towel or something.

"We went over and that's when we noticed it was a body."

Mr Price, who lives near the boat ramp, said police had asked the pair to look for clues along the river bank and he found a hat.

The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Anyone with information should contact Tweed/ Byron Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: www1.police.nsw.gov.au/.
