DRINK-drivers got a shock this weekend when five extra squad cars hit the road.

A total of 26 drink-drivers were caught in the act.

Tweed/Byron Local Area Command acting Senior Sergeant Chad George said he was disappointed with the statistics.

"That's nine up from last year," he said.

Throughout the three day Operation Drink Drive II police conducted 934 random breath tests.

They issued 104 infringement notices for anything from people not wearing seat belts to speeding.

Snr Sgt George said 23 other traffic tickets were issued after checks found people to be driving unlicensed and on disqualified licences.

"We don't want to see that," he said.

"Too many people are drinking-driving and not only does it put themselves at risk but it puts all other road users at risk too."

Snr Sgt George said leading into the Christmas period he hoped people would smarten up their act.

"We want to see people take more care and responsibility when using the roads," he said.

More operations will take place leading into and throughout the festive season.
