DUMPERS beware: you could face thousands of dollars in fines.

This month, North East Waste with the council has launched a new campaign targeting illegal dumping on the North Coast.

With more than 600 reported cases of illegal dumping on the North Coast last year, councils are concerned with the rising costs of clean-up and the environmental impacts of dumped waste in bushland.

The campaign includes TV, newspaper and radio advertising to raise awareness of the costs to the community of illegal dumping and the launch of an illegal dumping website.

The campaign also highlights the heavy fines that illegal dumpers can face.

The immediate consequence includes on-the-spot fines of up to $1500 for individuals and $5000 for businesses.

Offences under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act can reach up to $250,000 and possible jail time.

To assist in the effort to reduce illegal dumping in the Northern Rivers, your local council is asking you to report any information relating to illegally dumped materials.
