AN ELDERLY woman was left on the side of the road after possibly being hit by a car or falling into traffic yesterday

Tweed/Byron Local Area Command Inspector Gary Cowan said police were investigating an incident involving a 90-year-old woman outside Tweed City Shopping Centre.

About 3.30pm, near Crazy Clarks and the traffic lights on Minjungbal Dr, an incident occurred involving the elderly lady and a motor vehicle.

"Initial reports from witnesses suggested the lady was seen under the vehicle," a police statement said.

"The driver of the car assisted the lady to the footpath and then left the scene."

A witness contacted 000 and the injured woman was taken to Tweed Hospital.

Police said a crime scene was established and the Ballina Crash Investigation Unit attended.

"At this point it appears the woman may have fallen into traffic," Insp Cowan said.

The west bound lanes from Tweed City were closed for a short period of time while police investigated.

Witnesses have been spoken too, and a car examined for accident damage.

Police are seeking assistance from members of the public that may have been in the vicinity at the time and witnessed the incident.

Information can be provided to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Tweed Heads Police Station on 07 5536 0999.
