AN EVACUATION centre has been set up at the Sacred Heart Catholic church hall at South Murwillumbah to accommodate the 120 residents being warned to leave their homes.

Richmond Tweed region SES media officer Libby Spash said up to 200 residents could be affected by rising floodwaters in the next hour around Murwillumbah.

"South Murwillumbah has received an evacuation warning and crews have been door knocking to advise residents of rising floodwaters," she said.

"The Tweed River at South Murwillumbah was expected to top the levee at 11.10am."

Ms Spash said the SES were continuing to receive calls for assistance due to storm damage around the Wollongbar Alstonville area.

"We had a rescue of a person in a four wheel-drive trapped in floodwaters at McKinnons Bridge on Wardell Rd," she said.

Alstonville and Wollongbar showed signs of damage, with countless fallen trees blocking roadways and footpaths.

Wardell Rd on Alstonville's outskirts had been flooded in several places.

Wind had blown a 5 metre-high windmill over behind The Plaza shopping centre and was blocking a footpath before SES members came to move it.

Wollongbar resident Josh Nunn woke this morning to find a 2x2 metre part of his fence had been blown over and two rooms in his house had flooded.

"There were very, very strong winds and gusts here last night."

"I'll put some new screws in and fix it up when the weather eases if the rest of it doesn't blow away in the meantime," he said.

Around the Lismore area, Bangalow Rd is cut by floodwaters at Lagoon Grass and Wyrallah Rd is closed due to floodwaters across the road near the Gundurimba turnoff.

The Tweed Valley Way between Tweed Heads and Murwillumbah remains closed by floodwaters.

The South Murwillumbah evacuation centre is in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church hall on Murwillumbah St.
