Family waits anxiously as 2yo recovers from dog attack

THE family of a Grafton two-year-old who was savaged by a rottweiler in a Sydney backyard are waiting to see if microsurgery has been successful.

The family, which does not want to be named, will find out on Monday if the skin used to re-attach the boy's lips has taken hold, after the horrific attack in a friend's backyard late on Monday afternoon.

Surgeons at the Westmead Children's Hospital worked until 2.30am on Tuesday to repair damage to the boy's lips and cheek.

His grandmother, who travelled to Sydney to be with the family, said yesterday was the first time he was fully conscious.

"He's been kept sedated and very still," she said.

"His personality's still the same, but he's been very quiet."

The woman said the boy's father, who was also hospitalised in the attack, showed great courage to save his son's life.

"He jumped in between them and kicked the dog off him," she said.

"That's when he was bitten twice on the left leg."

The father has been released from hospital and is with his son.

The woman said the dog attacked the boy after he came off the back of a jumping castle in a friend's backyard in St Helens Park, Sydney.

"The dog was tied up down the back and it seems the boy might have surprised the dog," she said.

She said the dog bit off the boy's lips and savaged his cheek in the attack. Police found the lips and took them to the hospital where surgeons were able to re-attach them.

The woman said the dog, which belonged to the family, had never done anything like this before.

A media report said the dog has been surrendered to Campbelltown Council to be destroyed.
