NOON

THERE has been a fatal head-on crash on the Pacific Highway about 1.5km north of the Iluka turnoff this morning.

Police said a red Ford Laser travelling north crossed onto the wrong side of the road into the path of a southbound silver Ford Falcon about 10am. Police said a third vehicle, a black Toyota Camry, was also involved in the crash.

The 23-year-old male driver of the Laser was killed at the scene and the elderly couple in the Falcon were injured.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter flew one to Lismore Base Hospital and the other was taken by road ambulance to Lismore, with minor injuries.

The occupants of the Camry were unhurt, police said.

Traffic on the highway has been blocked in both directions and motorists are urged to take alternative routes until further notice.

Northbound motorists are advised to use Summerland Way between Grafton and Casino and the Bruxner Highway between Casino and Ballina.

Southbound motorists are advised to use the Bruxner Highway between Ballina and Casino and Summerland Way between Casino and Grafton.

This diversion is suitable for all vehicles and will add approximately one hour to your travel time.

Due to the serious nature of the accident its likely that the highway will be closed for some time.

For up-to-the-minute traffic information, go to www.livetraffic.com   This morning's fatal crash takes the state's holiday road toll to 10 - five fewer than for the same period last year. 430 others have been hurt in 1351 major traffic crashes.
