Fire danger threat increased to “extreme” in Tweed

THE NSW Rural Fire Service has upgraded the fire danger from very high to extreme on the Tweed.

The Bureau of Meteorology's predicted high temperatures arrived today and with a strong wind it forced an increase in the fire alert status.

The Tweed has the highest fire danger in NSW today after a cooler change downgraded the fire danger in southern parts of the state.

NSW Rural Fire Service area manager for the Tweed David Cook said the region had been "very lucky".

"We had a couple of ignitions yesterday with people burning of during the total fire ban," Mr Cook said.

"I think it's a disregard of the warnings because it (fire ban warning) has been published on every media channel."

Mr Cook said if a fire is lit during a total fire ban day then it becomes a police matter.

He said the fire warning was upgrade to extreme because of the hot weather moving up from the south, a strong wind and low humidity.

"The wind is strengthening as the southerly change moves in," he said.

"We have every crew on standby."

The extreme weather conditions that had emergency crews in southern parts of NSW on edge passed overnight.

The fire danger in Illawarra, that was at catastrophic on Tuesday, was lowered to high today.
