A NEW exhibition on display in the foyer of Byron Shire Council is shining a spotlight on the future of art education in Australia.

Claire Atkins titled her installation of slipcast and stained porcelain Fragile due the nature of the medium she works in - and to highlight the NSW Government's decision last September to axe funding for ceramics and fine arts courses at TAFE.

"The delicate porcelain cups and bowls balance in their positions as precariously as our art teachers and art students do in their positions throughout TAFE," said Ms Atkins, whose work is showcased in the Cube.

The State Government policy came into effect on January 30. The reason for the cuts is the lack of "job prospects and completion levels" in these courses compared with skills shortage areas such as health, community services, property and business services.

The Cube is a free space for local artists to exhibit 3D work.
