THE Christmas period is traditionally a busy time for animal rescue centres and this year seems no different.

While the Tweed pound saw a rather quiet Christmas, animal advocacy group Friends of the Pound said it was overwhelmed with animals over the Christmas period.

Friends of the Pound cat coordinator Sonja Trichter said the flood of abandoned animals started about two weeks before Christmas and only recently started to peter out.

"The influx of animals built up to such an extent, we were tearing our hair out with concerns of where to find the number of foster families we needed.

"We believe that most animals which are surrendered are the victims of people moving to rented accommodation where they are not allowed to keep their animals.

"Another reason is people moving to nursing homes and we also get animals from owners who are moving overseas.

"Then there are the people who go on holidays and don't make arrangements for their pets.

"We really wish that if people go on holidays, they include their pets in their planning," Ms Trichter said.

Although the organisation may be close to the limit of the number of animals it can care for, Friends of the Pound refuses to euthanise any of its surrendered animals.

"It may take some time but we'll find a home for every one of our animals," Ms Trichter said.
