PACKING up artist Margaret Olley's home studio is no mean feat.

Moving the wall-to-wall treasure trove from Paddington, Sydney to Murwillumbah's regional art gallery has been quite a process.

The Friends of the Tweed River Art Gallery will host an evening event celebrating the process, with key figures in the Tweed River Art Gallery's Margaret Olley Art Centre project relating the experience this Friday at the gallery.

Trustee of the Olley estate Christine France and project co-ordinator, Sally Watterson will share details of their experiences, both humorous and poignant, of packing up Margaret's possessions from her home at Duxford Street.

The long, complicated and often very dusty job was all in a day's work for Ms Watterson who was engaged by the Friends of the Gallery to coordinate the exciting project.

Ms France also wrote the first biography of the artist.

Published in 1990, it reveals the colourful and intricate kaleidoscope of memories between people and places of Margaret's life and work.

"I know the audience will enjoy hearing Christine and Sally share stories," said gallery director Susi Muddiman.

"It is a unique project and one that I know both ladies are proud to be part of.

"Sally's attention to detail and methodical approach to a seemingly unachievable job is inspiring.

"Christine's knowledge of so many of the objects, whether they were included in Margaret's paintings or knowing where Margaret sourced her amusing array of gadgets is fascinating.

"This is an evening not to be missed."

President of the Friends of the Gallery, Lyn Stewart said hearing Christine speak of her friend and national icon Margaret Olley was "truly heart-warming."

"Christine has so many lovely anecdotes to share about Margaret and her extraordinary life," she said.

The Friends of the Gallery will also be providing refreshments.

The event is a fundraiser hosted by the Friends of the Gallery in support of the Margaret Olley Art Centre.

Tickets are $30.

Bookings are essential on 02 6670 2790.
