Finding perfect gifts for the men in your life can be hard

Settling on gifts for dads and husbands can be quite an exhausting exercise.

I FIND that settling on a gift for my dad or husband is quite an exhausting exercise.

The main problem is that their wants are few - well, fewer than mine anyway.

They either already have the natural things that come to mind or they would prefer to choose those important items for themselves.

Here's hoping these suggestions will allow you to tick a few goodies off your list or inspire you to find the perfect present.

For dads who like to exercise and stay active, sports wear and equipment would be a good place to start.

Shy away from large pieces like treadmills, rowing machines and cycle machines, which work best when matched with personal choice.

Perhaps opt instead for boxing equipment (from $79.99 at A-Mart Allsports) or a watch with a heart rate monitor (from $199 at Rebelsport).

Most large sporting and department stores also carry a large range of fitness clothing and bags.

Target has a good middle of the range offering with T-shirts starting from $19 and running shorts from $25.

If your dad isn't already an avid golfer he probably has it on his to-do list.

Most golf courses have a shop with experts who can offer advice on clubs and equipment.

They also offer golf lessons, which usually start from $70 for an hour.

Speciality golf shops like Drummond Golf, The House of Golf and Golf World carry an extensive range of clothing, clubs and technical equipment.

At Golf World until November 30, purchase any Nike Series eight-piece iron sets and receive free a Nike Extreme Sport IV Stand Bag valued at $189.99. Drummond Golf has discounted their SureShot Micro Golf GPS to $149 (from $249.95).

Fathers and power tools seem to go hand-in-hand.

If yours fancies himself as a Jack-of-all-trades even though he may leave a long list of half-finished projects in his wake, the least you can do is play along with the charade.

Home Hardware has an impressive deal on the Bosch Lithium-Ion Driver Drill set ($169) which includes three masonry and wood bits, eight screwdriver bits, two batteries and an accessory set. Bunnings is always a good stop for tool boxes (from $35) and screwdriver sets (from $9.98) while Mitre 10 now has a run on workbenches from $70.

If you are looking for something smaller but useful consider a multi-tool like a Leatherman, which is available from adventure and camping stores and starts at around $160 for a basic version.

Technological choices are usually high on the list even for dads who usually shy away from progressive offerings.

There are good deals to be had on the iPad 2 from $499 at Target and iPad mini (from $369 at Harvey Norman).

If your father has an iPhone perhaps look at accessories like covers (from $20) and Sports armbands (from $44) or even an Accessory Organiser priced from $24.95 and Mobile Xtand ($49.95).

Dads may insist the games consoles in the house are there for the kids but there are many who will have a go without much arm twisting.

Kmart has the Wii U console basic pack for $338 and the premium pack with 32G internal storage for $418. Games start at $40 new.

Barbecues and barbecue accessories are also usually a hit. The Weber Qs - a small portable gas barbecue - are all the rage (from $289 at Barbeques Galore) and they come with a series of more affordable add-ons.

A good barbecuer is only as good as his tools and your dad would probably put to good use the Mini Meat Thermometers ($14.95 at Barbeques Galore) or the Vue 12-piece BBQ tool set on sale at Myer for $27.95.

Dads today seem to have embraced the metrosexual trends which place a high emphasis on personal grooming.

The Shaver Shop has the Panasonic Wet/Dry Electric Shaver with automatic cleaner and charger at $99.95, which is half price.

Myer's Natio skincare range starts at $19.95 while the Body Shop has also ramped up its offerings, especially for those with sensitive skins (from $15.95).

Most dads are still big kids at heart and can appreciate the makings of remote control or electric toys.

There is no reason not to have some fun with Kmart's remote control gyroscope helicopter ($20).

When choosing a gift for your dad try not to get too caught up in big is best.

He will love whatever you get him, even if it is just a pack of socks ($7.95 Target).
