A GLASSING along Ewingsdale Road and an assault and robbery in the Main Beach car park of Byron Bay last night highlighted a busy time for police in the holiday town.

Tweed Byron Local Area Command duty officer, Inspector Jason Dowds, said a 22-year-old male visitor to the town stabbed a 31-year-old male in the bicep and cut him on the legs with a broken bottle near the intersection of Shirley and Dryden streets at 11:15pm.

The accused, who will appear in Lismore Local Court today, had previously been ordered to move out of the CBD for drunken behaviour when he approached a group of friends with two broken bottles and began yelling abuse.

He then led the attack before his victim retaliated by punching him several times.

The offender has been charged with malicious wounding with intent.

In another incident just before midnight a man was attacked and robbed of his bag in the Main Beach car park. The 18-year-old offender, also a visitor to the town, was arrested a short time later not far from where the incident took place, still in possession of the bag.

He was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with intent to rob and also for breaching prior bail conditions.

Insp Dowds said it was a relatively small influx of trouble makers that created the trouble in Byron last night, with none of the accused hailing from the popular New Year's Eve destination.

"Police were busier this year than last," he said.

"It seems that it was the result of different groups of trouble makers coming into town.

"All it takes is 30 or 40 people out of 10,000 to create a lot more work for police."
