Golf course turns into lake and leaves debris behind

John Brinsmead cleans up on the 18th hole at Chinderah Golf Course.

CHINDERAH Golf Course became a water world on Tuesday when tinnies and jet skis took to the course.

The course was flooded, so while golf was out of the question, there was other fun to be had.

"Flooding is part and parcel of running a golf course in a flood-prone area," said owner John Brinsmead.

Mr Brinsmead said there was no sign of flooding first thing on Tuesday morning.

"We were thinking of opening," he said.

Flood waters rose fast.

He was busy this morning clearing debris from the course.

"We really copped," he said.

"This one was pretty high.

"The water comes through the back of Melaleuca Station."

The cows that reside next to the course stood in water for half the day yesterday.

"Back in 1974 the road was so widely covered with water that you could come up the road in a tinnie," Mr Brinsmead said.

"But 1954's flood was bigger according to the locals.

"We've been brought up with the floods.

"New people to the area tend to get a bit scared.

"We tend to know where will get hit most.

"If you get caught out it's your own fault.

"Rumour has it that there is more to come."
