Triple treat for Gotye makes Grammys history

AUSTRALIAN singer Gotye has bagged three Grammy awards in Los Angeles, including the prestigious gong for Record of the Year for the worldwide smash, Somebody That I Used To Know.

The 32-year-old became the first Australian to win multiple Grammys for the same release and only the second to win best record after Olivia Newton-John with I Honestly Love You in 1975.

Gotye also won Grammys for best pop duo performance and best alternative album for Making Mirrors.

Somebody That I Used To Know, which he recorded with Kiwi songstress Kimbra, was the highest selling single of 2012.

A staggering 13 million copies of the single were sold around the world and it was the number one iTunes song in more than 50 countries.

He picked up six ARIA awards in 2011 for the album and single.

Gotye admitted to being a little bit star struck after receiving his best record Grammy from music legend Prince.

"I'm a little bit lost for words to receive the award from the man standing behind is here with the cane ... a big reason I was inspired to make music," the Victorian said of Prince.

"'I want to thank everybody who puts great energy into the world by making music.

"I'm grateful to everyone at home for their constant support. It's been amazing and I don't take it for granted."

Earlier, Gotye - real name is Wouter de Backer - thanked his parents who provided a place for him to record much of Making Mirrors.

"I recorded it mostly in a barn on my dad's block of land south-east of Melbourne, Australia, so I have to thank dad and my mum for setting up a lot of weird equipment in a barn near their house," Gotye said.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard issued a statement congratulating Gotye on his remarkable success.

"Gotye is an outstanding example of the quality of the artistic talent in Australia today and highlights the need for continued investment in young artists and musicians," the statement read.

The singer will land in Canberra on Friday to join Arts Minister Simon Crean to officially open the Fractured Heart interactive sculpture at the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.

Meanwhile, One of the other big awards of the night, album of the year, was taken out by British folk group Mumford and Sons for Babel.
