GOOD news and yet more good news out of Murwillumbah Football Club this week with the signing not only of another three top class footballers and a new major sponsor but the fact that the town's sports fans are supporting the Gold Coast Soccer Premier League newcomers to the hilt.

And why wouldn't they come out of the woodwork to cheer on MFC?

Captain-coach, David Lonie and the club's committee, are putting together a formidable squad for their debut season in the elite competition - on paper there won't be a struck match between the first and second grade line-ups with competition fierce as players battle for places in the top XI.

A large crowd was on hand at Jim Devine Field last weekend to see MFC wallop leading Football Far North Coast outfit, Lismore Thistles 6-1, following hard on the previous week's 4-0 trial win over Lismore Rovers.

Lonie has his team playing exciting attacking football which will ensure the turnstiles (if there were any) at Jim Devine keep whirling and whirling throughout the season.

The attack and defence against Thistles was hot but both areas will be even hotter with this week's signings.

Linking with the club are last year's Golden Boot recipient, 18-year-old Alex Thelwall who knocked in 39 goals for Tweed United in 2012, hard man defender Matthew "The Tractor" Peate who joins from Tweed Valley Kings and Joel Saye, a defender from Richmond Rovers who has long been a regular in FFNC representative teams.

Another key signing is that of the superbly renovated Murwillumbah Hotel (Murrays) whose proprietors have come on board as the major sponsor.

"We are over the moon in getting Murray's to link with us," Lonie said.

"What they have done in renovating the old hotel is mind-blowing - it is truly a fabulous venue and one of which we'll all be proud to call our home this season."

Lonie certainly has a glut of talent on the books with superb defenders and any number of players capable of finding the back of the net.

In Thelwall, Luke Morley, Troy Ruthven, Josh Boag, Brent Malone, Chris Garside and Simon Hercombe, MFC has a treasure trove of goal scorers.

MFC will be in action at Jim Devine today in trials against top Brisbane outfit, Ridge Hill - games are at 5pm and 7pm.
